Borough of Stone Harbor receives

Cape May County Chamber of Commerce

Conservation Award

Bird Sanctuary Award CMCO Chamber 2016

A combined effort to restore the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary gardens has resulted in the Borough of Stone Harbor being presented with the Cape May County Annual Conservation Award. Mayor Walters was present to receive the award on behalf of the Borough.

In the past year the Bird Sanctuary Committee, the Wetlands Institute and the Borough of Stone Harbor set upon a course to revitalize and renovate the gardens which included the gardens surrounding the Egret Espy path on Second Avenue and the area around the pump house on Third Avenue near 114th Street.

The plan included restoration of the gardens using only native plants that, once established, will require little or no watering, thus supporting conservation efforts. The plant selections and garden composition placed an emphasis on providing critical needs to songbirds, hummingbirds, butterflies and pollinators.

Work was completed by the Stone Harbor Public Works Department and volunteers. 10 gardens in total have been replanted with more than 240 plants which included 18 different species of native perennials and 4 different shrubs. The Wetlands Institute designed the gardens to include a range of colors, textures, and plant habit and bloom times to ensure a critical balance of wildlife usage.

Plans are in place to continue to renovate the additional gardens within the Bird Sanctuary.
