Staff from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Waterfowl Ecology and Management Program will be capturing and tagging Atlantic Brant at Stone Harbor’s 80th Street Recreation Fields from Mid-January through Mid-March 2021, as part of their Atlantic Brant Banding Project. Approximately 30 GPS backpacks and hundreds of colored leg bands will be deployed on Atlantic brant as part of their research. Cannon nets will be used to capture the birds. The blasts do sound like gunshots, however there will be no harm whatsoever to the birds and no safety concerns for the residents. The Borough of Stone Harbor requests request that the public refrain from using this area while the project is in process.
