January 11, 2023 – A message from the Stone Harbor Department of Public Works

Stone Harbor Residents and Visitors!  Did you know that effective May 1, 2023, your trash and recycling receptacles need to be ANSI Z245.60 – 2008 Type B plastic receptacles with suitable handles, wheels, metal bar and tight-fitting covers?

We are modifying our trash trucks to accommodate automated “lifters” to minimize injuries and improve service.  You can purchase the new receptacles at any local hardware store or home center (Ace, Home Depot, Lowe’s etc.) and any brand of receptacle will work as long as it has the wheels, metal bar, handle and cover/lid.

FAQs:

1 – What should I do with the old cans?

Unfortunately, the County recycling center is not equipped to recycle trash containers.  However, they do make for good composters with some easy modifications.  Otherwise, place a note on the can and our collectors will dispose of it.

2- Should I put the new trash and recycling cans curbside?

By Ordinance, DPW personnel are not permitted to enter a fenced in yard that has a pool or a pet.  In those cases, we ask that you place the receptacles outside of your fenced area on the morning of the pickup day and they will be handled as normal.  If you do not have a fenced in pool or pet containment area, please leave your receptacles in the rear yard and our collectors will pull them from your rear yard and return them.

3 – How big of a receptacle should I get?

The maximum size container is 96-gallons. However, you can purchase a receptacle in any of the standard sizes available from 32-gallons up to 96-gallons.  It all depends on how much trash and recycling you typically produce.  The pictorial guide below describes how much trash and the dimensions of various size cans for your reference.

A Typical 96 Gallon ANSI B Container is 43.25 inches high, 39.75 inches wide and 35.75 inches long.
It can hold 7 typical tall kitchen trash bags with a maximum load rating of 335 pounds.
