Stone Harbor Breaks Ground on New County Library Branch

STONE HARBOR, NJ — County and Stone Harbor officials broke ground on Tuesday, September 30, 2015, on the site of the Stone Harbor Branch of the Cape May Library. The new Library will be located at the corner of 96th Street and 2nd Avenue.
Freeholder Director Gerald M. Thornton and Freeholder E. Marie Hayes, Liaison to the Library joined Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters, Council President Barry D. Mastrangelo, and Council members Albert Carusi, Joan Kramar and Joselyn Rich; along with Library Commission Chairman Lawrence Allan, Vice Chair Jacqueline Henderson and Library Director Deborah Poillon, in the official ground breaking ceremony for the Stone Harbor Branch of the Cape May County Library.
Freeholder Hayes praised the work of the Stone Harbor Library committee members and County employees who worked diligently to bring the project to this point. “After many months of meetings and negotiations, we can say this is a project that meets the needs of the citizens of Stone Harbor and is an asset to the Cape May County Library system. We are proud to be here today to begin the construction of the library,” Hayes said. “We anticipate the completion of the building by October 2016”, she added.
Mayor Susanne Walters stated, “The Borough of Stone Harbor is happy to see the project begin and we want to thank the members of the Stone Harbor Library Committee for their dedication to the project and the many hours spent to get a library that will serve the community for many years to come.”

“I also want to thank the County Board of Freeholders, the Library Commission, Deb Poillon, Library Director and Ann Marie McMahon, Cape May County Facilities and Services Director, for their work on the project”, Walters added.
Freeholder Director Thornton expresses his gratitude for those who worked so diligently to get the project on track and moving forward.
The Library will be 9,400 square feet, which includes almost 2,000 square feet of stack space for books, DVDs, audiobooks, video games and other library materials. The exterior of the building will feature seating areas along 96th Street at both ground level and the second floor decks for patrons to grab a chair and a coffee and watch the hustle and bustle of the summer traffic. The building will be clad in low maintenance materials and have high efficiency heating and air conditioning units.

Stone Harbor Dredge Update

STONE HARBOR DIGS DEEPER INTO DREDGING PROJECT
Stone Harbor is taking the necessary steps to perform maintenance dredging of the Stone Harbor Lagoons this fall to serve the boating community, residents, and those utilizing the waterways.
This June, the Borough will solicit bids from dredging contractors. The project will include maintenance dredging, dewatering the dredged material at the Stone Harbor Marina parking lot, and placing the dredged material at approved upland facilities. Up to 179,000 cubic yards of dredged material may be removed from the waterways. Based on the quantity of dredged material, logistical constraints, and environmental restrictions, this work will take place over a two-year period. In-water dredging activities will occur from September to December of each year. The Borough will provide details on the scheduling and phasing when finalized. The NJDEP and USACE permits for this project are pending approval.
The Borough recently completed a detailed hydrographic survey of the basin and slip areas. The Borough will make the results of this survey available to the public later this month. Those property owners with bayfront access are encouraged to review the data and determine if they would like to participate in the maintenance dredging project to restore water depths within their slips. The Borough will provide details for inclusion in the project in the coming months.
The Borough of Stone Harbor retained COWI North America Inc. (COWI)
[formerly Ocean and Coastal Consultants (OCC)] to provide professional services related to the dredging project.
