Borough Launches New Emergency Website, www.stoneharboremergency.com

The Borough of Stone Harbor has launched a brand new emergency management that will provide instant notifications and community education to the public in the event of a hurricane, storm event, or another emergent condition in the community.  The url for the website is www.stoneharboremergency.com.

“One of the lessons learned during Hurricane Sandy last year was to provide immediate access to all of the latest information to the public before, during, and after a storm event”, said Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters.  “A special website dedicated to emergency management has a proven track record of providing instant notification and communication with the public during a major storm event when essential information becomes available literally minute by minute”.

The new Stone Harbor Emergency Management website will provide instant notifications of all emergency conditions that exist in the Borough, including hurricanes, coastal storms, winter storms, flooding, missing persons, and any event that may endanger lives or property.  Notifications will provided by the Stone Harbor Office of Emergency Management and by the Stone Harbor Office of Public Information.  Each time a new notice is issued, it will appear at the top of the front page of the emergency website.

The website also includes other essential information for the public including trusted media sources, links to Borough, County and State emergency websites, real time weather conditions and tide information, and explanations of storm events.  The website also contains and important educational component with tips on preparing for an emergency and how to safely evacuate when an evacuation order is given.

“The public should not have to sort through the clutter of a typical municipal website during a storm event when essential information is needed immediately”, Mayor Walters said.  “This type of an emergency management website has worked well in other coastal communities and our site is modeled after the county’s new emergency management website for consistency.  A website like this also simply pushes out essential information immediately and eliminates the confusion and false information that is disseminated by social media”.

The website www.stoneharboremergency.com is also easily viewable on many smart phones that have internet access.  The site was created by Joyce Media of Bridgeton, New Jersey who is currently conducting a redesign of the Borough’s municipal website as well.

Notice: 123rd Street Parking Lot To Experience Short Closures

The Borough of Stone Harbor will be closing a parking lot and a small section of Second Avenue to the public to allow for the removal of some steel pipe following a successful reconstruction of the Stone Harbor beachfront.

The public parking lot located at 123rd Street and Second Avenue in Stone Harbor will be closed on Thursday and Friday, August 15th and 16th between the hours of 6:00am and Noon.  In addition, both the northbound and southbound lanes of Second Avenue from 122nd Street to 123rd Street will be closed during that time.  The closures are necessary to permit Norfolk Dredging Company to safely load steel pipe used for the recent beach fill project onto trucks and exit the community.  This heavy equipment will leave Stone Harbor for Norfolk’s next project in New York.

It is possible that the parking lot and small portion of Second Avenue will be closed on Saturday, August 17th from 6:00am until 10:00am if the off load project is not completed by Noon on Friday.

Stone Harbor Holds Successful Community Paper Shredding Day

STONE HARBOR – The Borough of Stone Harbor held a successful community paper shredding day on May 18. The event was held on the parking lot at 95th Street and the beach adjacent to the popular Stone Harbor Yard Sale and was an initiative of the Stone Harbor Go Green Community Committee. More than two tons of documents were shredded during the three-hour event.

“We were very excited by the turnout and by the willingness of Stone Harbor property owners to shred their outdated documents”, said Councilwoman Karen Lane, Chairperson of the Go Green Community Committee. “These documents and papers will not wind up in our solid waste stream and were immediately taken to a recycling facility”.

Guardian Document Destruction Company of Mt. Holly, New Jersey conducted the paper shredding event from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for the Borough. Property owners were encouraged to bring an unlimited amount of documents that would be shredded on site before taken to a recycling facility. Residents were able to personally view the destruction of their documents on site via a closed circuit television monitor.

According to Guardian Document Destruction Company, a total of 4,197 pounds of documents were shredded and recycled during the Stone Harbor paper shredding event.

The Borough last held a community paper shredding event in 2006.

‘Go Green’ group forms in Stone Harbor

WRITTEN BY ALEX DAVIS

STONE HARBOR – This borough is going greener.

On July 17, Borough Council unanimously approved the creation of a volunteer group named Go Green Community.

“We are very excited to present this new volunteer organization in the borough of Stone Harbor to help further our proactive efforts at being a ‘green’ community,” said Stone Harbor Councilwoman Karen Lane, who also heads council’s utility committee. “This new volunteer organization will work to create many new environmental initiatives in the borough that will help us keep Stone Harbor a beautiful place to live and visit for generations to come.”

Members of Go Green Community include Alan Kaplan, Patti DiMarco-Sheston, Larry Kratzer, Stone Harbor Public Works director Gregory Sheeran, Stone Harbor utilities inspector Chuck McIlvaine, island supervisor Joe Hughes. Stone Harbor public information officer Scott Wahl will serve as an adviser to the committee, while Lane will act as a liaison to the Borough Council.

The special committee will advise the mayor, council and administration. The first meeting will be held in August.

One of the main conservation initiatives for Go Green Community will be with the use of water. Earlier this year, Borough Council implemented new policies to reduce the amount of water that the public uses. Every community in the state of New Jersey has to follow the guidelines of a water allocation permit established by the state Department of Environmental Protection or face possible fines to excessive water use, according to a press release from Stone Harbor.

‘Even during the excessive heat of a summertime at the Jersey Shore, residents and businesses can still have green, healthy lawns and gardens while greatly reducing the amount of water that they use,” Lane said. “Stone Harbor’s efforts to reduce our use of water have worked well but we still need the cooperation of everyone in our community to follow the program and remain within the limits of our state permit.”

Local Businesswoman to Share How She Started Over After Sandy

Local Businesswoman to Share How She Started Over After Sandy
STONE HARBOR ― On Wednesday, June 12 at 11 a.m., Caroline Ranoia, owner of Blue Eden Boutique, 324 96th Street in Stone Harbor, will talk with Action News correspondent Karen Rogers of WPVI-TV, Channel 6 in Philadelphia, about her experience as a business owner displaced by Superstorm Sandy.
In October 2012, Ranoia’s former boutique in Avalon was virtually destroyed by Sandy, the powerful hurricane that devastated homes and businesses across the East Coast and caused some $50 billion in property damage. When she realized the shop could not be repaired in time for the summer 2013 tourist season, Ranoia salvaged all the merchandise she could, stored it in her tiny cottage home in Wildwood, and then scoured the listings until she found a new home on 96th Street, the heart of Stone Harbor’s bustling business district.
“So many other business owners have similar stories to tell,” Ranoia says. “I’ve been impressed and inspired by the determination and courage of my fellow merchants, who have managed to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and in many cases begin again from scratch. It’s been a challenging period for all of us, but we’ve survived and we’re open for business.”
Ranoia is also grateful to find herself in the supportive environment of Stone Harbor’s vibrant shopping hub. “The community has really welcomed Blue Eden,” she said. “We’re making new friends every day and I think it’s going to be a sensational summer.”
Blue Eden Boutique specializes in unique clothing, one-of-a-kind jewelry, locally created art and beauty essentials. Product lines include Hobo International leather goods, Kut from Kloth jeans, vintage-inspired women’s PJs, and Ranoia’s own line of handmade Sea Foam Soaps. The aromatic hard-milled bars, made in her own kitchen from a recipe handed down by her grandmother, come in fragrances like lavender and tea tree, patchouli and peppermint. Ranoia also carries a line of sugar scrubs and invites customers to try before they buy.

“STONE HARBOR SHOWS WE ARE “STRONGER THAN THE STORM”

Beaches opened for the season; beach concession stands arrive

(Stone Harbor, NJ)—Stone Harbor joined other select beach communities throughout the State of New Jersey with a “Stronger than the Storm” event on the Borough’s beachfront. Nearly 500 residents, visitors, and school children helped Mayor and Council cut a ribbon to show that Stone Harbor is open for business, and the recovery from Hurricane Sandy is complete.

“This event allowed everyone to get together and show Stone Harbor’s resilience following the storm that impacted our coastline seven months ago”, said Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters. “Stone Harbor has been ready for the summer season for months, and today’s enthusiastic support for this ribbon cutting event showed that we have put ‘Sandy’ behind us and our community is ready for a banner tourism season”.

Stone Harbor officials, residents, business owners, and students held a one-mile long ribbon on the Borough’s beachfront. Mayor and Council formally cut the ribbon to open the beaches for the tourism season. Beach Patrol Captain Sandy Bosacco joined Mayor Walters with unlocking the ocean for the holiday weekend. Mayor Walters also formally cut the ribbon on the beach concession stands that return to the Stone Harbor beachfront for the summer, 2013 season.

The Borough continues with its major beach fill project through the holiday weekend. Nearly 700,000 cubic yards of new sand is being placed on the entire beachfront throughout the spring and part of the summer. The project will result in an expanded protective and recreational beach for the community and repair damage caused by hurricanes Irene and Sandy. Beaches remain open during the beach fill project except for a block or two in the immediate work area.
