Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary Habitat Restoration Project 2020

Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary Habitat Restoration Project 2020

A number of non-native, invasive plants have become established in the wetlands and transition areas located within the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary. These plants have crowded out native vegetation, reduced species diversity, and degraded habitat functions and values for wildlife within the Sanctuary.

To address this issue, the Borough of Stone Harbor proposes to conduct the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary Habitat Restoration Project to manage the invasive species common reed (Phragmites australis) and purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) via herbicide application, hand cutting and removal. These invasive species will be treated with the herbicide Imazapyr**. Subsequent to treatment, invasive species would be cut and removed from the Sanctuary by hand to limit their spread.

This project is currently in the permitting phase and there is a requirement within this process to notify all neighbors within 200 feet of the proposed project.  The Initial treatment is scheduled for the Fall of 2020 (after Labor Day – October).

The effective management of invasive vegetation would require a multi-year treatment program.  It is anticipated that after the first two years, any subsequent treatments would consist of relatively minor maintenance using backpack sprayers.

**Imazapyr is of relatively low toxicity to birds, mammals, and fish; studies indicate imazapyr is excreted by mammalian systems rapidly with no bioaccumulation (Tu et al. 2001). Imazapyr is classified by the U.S. EPA as a Group E compound, indicating that the herbicide shows no evidence of carcinogenicity

Stone Harbor Police Department Now Accepting Online Police Reports

SHPD NOW ACCEPTING ONLINE POLICE REPORTS

In an effort to increase public access to file a police report while decreasing person to person contact during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Stone Harbor Police Department is now accepting online police reports.

While emergencies, crimes in progress, incidents involving significant injury, or any act of domestic violence should be reported by dialing 911 and non-emergent incidents in progress should be immediately reported to our non-emergency number (609) 368-2111, many incidents which are not in progress can initially be reported online.

Examples of incidents which may be reported online include, Identity Theft, Theft of Bicycles, Theft (except medication, narcotics, or controlled substances), Harassment (except domestic violence, threats with a weapon, or bomb threats), Criminal Mischief, Lost Property (except lost firearms or other weapons), Follow-Up Reports, Reports for Insurance Purposes, Fraud, Embezzlement, Bad Checks, Credit Card Theft, Shoplifting (when the victim has no knowledge of what was actually stolen or the suspect is unknown and there is no vehicle information), and Simple Assault (only when the victim knows the offender – this does not include domestic violence).

Please Note: The online reporting public portal is NOT a constantly monitored service and may not result in an immediate police response. If you are reporting an event that is IN PROGRESS or requires an IMMEDIATE POLICE RESPONSE, DO NOT UTILIZE THE ONLINE REPORTING PUBLIC PORTAL. Rather, any call that requires an immediate response should be reported via 911 for emergencies or (609) 368-2111 for non-emergencies.

For more information or to file a report online, follow the below link. Once filed, officers will review your report and follow-up with you via phone or email.
