Stone Harbor, NJ – May 21, 2023 – On Sunday, May 21st, at approximately 3:00 pm, emergency services in Stone Harbor responded to a 911 call reporting a surfer who had sustained injuries from a possible shark attack while surfing in the waters off the 109th Street beach. The Stone Harbor Police Department, along with the Fire and Rescue Squads, promptly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
The injured surfer, identified as a 15 year-old female from Pennsylvania, sustained several lacerations to her left foot and calf received immediate onsite medical treatment from Stone Harbor Fire/Rescue.
Subsequently, the juvenile was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for further evaluation and care, where she received 6 stitches. Fortunately, the injuries were assessed as non-life-threatening.
The Stone Harbor Police Department has been actively collaborating with local marine life experts and professionals in an ongoing effort to determine the exact cause of the surfer’s wounds. After careful examination, it has been ascertained by the New Jersey State Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office that the injuries sustained by the surfer are consistent with those typically associated with a shark of unknown size and type.
At this time, no restrictions on beach activities are planned. However, the Borough of Stone Harbor urges all beachgoers to exercise caution and adhere to any safety guidelines issued by local authorities. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with water activities in areas where marine life thrives. According to the International Shark Attack File Beach Injuries and Fatalities Report, the odds of a shark attack in the United States are 1 in 11.5 million. However low the risk, The Borough encourages all visitors to remain vigilant.
Mayor Judy Davies-Dunhour emphasizes that “Stone Harbor remains a beloved and popular destination for beachgoers from near and far. The local police and fire departments are fully committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and tourists. They are taking appropriate measures to thoroughly assess the situation and provide necessary updates to the public.”

May 22, 2023 – A message from the Stone Harbor Department of Public Works
Starting May 29th, the Stone Harbor Public Works Department will no longer pick up non-compliant trash and recycling cans. If you have a non-compliant can (compliant cans are listed as ANSI Z245.60 Type B), we will still pick up your trash and recycling this week, however, you will be given a notice on your front door warning you of the impending change next week.
Compliant trash and recycling containers are available at all local hardware stores as well as on line. Can sizes from 32 gallons to 96 gallons can be selected. Twice a week pick up of trash and recycling is now in effect until mid-September. As always, we will retrieve and return your cans to your trash corral as long as it is not in a pool enclosed area or in a pet containment area.

Below are the latest updates on the ongoing efforts on the Avalon and Stone Harbor beach fill project. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (GLDD), the contractor responsible for the project, has successfully placed 581,000 cubic yards of sand, completing the Avalon portion of the project. With this phase completed, GLDD has commenced demobilizing the equipment in Avalon and is relocating it to Stone Harbor.
The dredge, currently located at Cape May Harbor, is undergoing essential preventive maintenance before commencing sand pumping operations in Stone Harbor. Meanwhile, the booster pump has arrived and is currently being set up for operation.
GLDD aims to begin pumping sand in Stone Harbor on Sunday, May 21, barring any adverse weather conditions. However, the current forecast indicates the possibility of 4 to 6 foot swells on Sunday, which could potentially delay the start of dredging. Updates on the project’s progress will be provided regularly once operations commence.
The planned sand placement for Stone Harbor is an impressive 714,000 cubic yards. Based on preconstruction surveys, modifications have been made to the beach fill template. The revised template now includes additional sand in three distinct areas:
GLDD intends to begin work at the northern beaches and progress southwardly, ensuring a systematic and comprehensive beach fill process.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, along with the Army Corps of Engineers is making significant progress with the Beach Replenishment project. According to the latest reports, the Avalon portion of the beach fill is expected to be finished by the evening of May 11th or the morning of May 12th.
Currently, the contractor is working on completing the pipeline which comes ashore in the area of Stone Harbor’ s 90th Street beach to the location of the booster pump, which is approximately 17,600 feet away. The booster pump will be located approximately a half-mile offshore, located at 31st Street.
After the sand pumping to Avalon is complete, the dredge will head to Cape May for preventive maintenance. Meanwhile, grading and de-mobilizing will continue in Avalon, and preparations will be made for mobilizing to Stone Harbor.
The project team is still anticipating a start date of May 21st for the Stone Harbor portion of the beach replenishment project. With this progress, the Borough of Stone Harbor can look forward to an improved beach experience for its residents and visitors this summer.
